The Atkins diet is really called the Atkins nutritional approach. It was the brainchild of the doctor named Robert Atkins. He had gained a great deal of weight while he attended medical school. He read about this diet in the medical journal. He built on that diet and eventually made it popular.

Dr. Atkins had rather radical theories about the nature of weight gain as expressed in the Atkins diet. He held that saturated fats weren’t as bad as people claim. Carbohydrates, found in potatoes, and breads, were the real problem. Atkins held that our obsession with fat actually worsened the problem. Carbohydrates are used to make up for the lack of fat in low fat foods. That meant people on a diet often ate foods that were worse than they normally ate.

The Atkins diet changes this. He shifts dieters’ metabolism to burn body fats by cutting out carbohydrates from their diets. That’s the goal of weight loss. It’s not just a matter of eating less. Now it was all about what your diet can help you burn. The Atkins diet supposedly burned an extra 950 calories everyday. But the claims were not true.

Dr. Atkins also touted the positive influence this Atkins diet could have on people with type 2 diabetes. Being overweight is generally considered the major cause for type 2 diabetes. Therefore, by means of losing weight a person on the Atkins diet would be addressing their type 2 diabetes. But the Atkins diet is also low in carbohydrates, which must be avoided with type 2 diabetes regardless of caloric intake, so by means of this aspect of the diet Atkins claimed those who suffer type 2 diabetes would no longer need medication such as insulin. The jury is still out in the medical world as to the causes of type 2 diabetes. So while science agrees with Atkins that lowering intake of Carbohydrates will help with the disease, it would disagree that the step alone would remove the necessity for medicine.

So just how does this Atkins diet work? It consists of four steps or phases which are induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. The details of the induction phase are as follows.

The Induction phase is the most difficult phase of the Atkins diet. It lasts for about two weeks. During induction the dieter can consume only about 20 grams of carbohydrates on a day to day basis. The result of this phase should be ketosis; a metabolic reaction by which the body converts stored fat into fatty acids, generally prompted by a lack of glucose. Weight loss of 20 pounds over this period isn’t uncommon and that’s a staggering amount.

Learning the ideal carbohydrate levels for weight losing and for day to day intake after the weight loss ends are the purposes of the final three phases in the Atkins diet. Dr. Atkins himself died of complications of increased fat intake in his diet, which is something to keep in mind when choosing this diet.

All you hear about today is “Fit into those skinny jeans in a few days” advertisements. I have tried seems like every diet on this planet and a few others. I hear the same thing from every diet plan that promises to help me get thin.

Then I read what authorities on weight have to say and it sounds something like this; obesity is a physical state that refers to excessive body fat. And to reduce body fat takes time and exercise. The first thing that comes off is water not fat. Fat is burned off and to burn fat you must exercise. So what is diet and dieting I asked myself? You may have asked the same questions and chances are you have experienced the frustrations of dieting at least once in your life, if you have problems with your weight.

Statistics say that close to a hundred million people go on a weight loss diet in any given year; up to ninety-five percent of them regain the weight they lose within five years, I was in the 95% category. Worse, a third will gain back more weight than they lost, in danger of “yo-yoing” from one popular diet to another.

First you try one quick diet and maybe that diet helps you lose some body fluid, and you think that you have lost weight. In reality you only lost temporary body water, a quick 5 to 10 pounds or so. Then in a few days after the quick diet you find the 5 – 10 pounds and maybe a few more have returned.

The conventional approach to weight problems is that we focus on quick fad weight loss diets or weight loss drugs, and these may leave you with just as much weight and the additional burden of ill health and low self esteem. Low self esteem because you start to think you can’t lose weight, when you really want to be thin or just thinner.

Today, an estimated sixty-five percent of all adults are obese or overweight. Our culture obsesses about staying thin even as we grow fatter, but this isn’t about appearances. Obesity is known to be a precursor to many debilitating health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and gallbladder disease. I find my health conditions concern me more than just losing the weight.

In my search for more information on my health concerns, I found out that obesity contributes to as many as 375,000 deaths every year. In addition, the public health costs for obesity are staggering. According to researchers at Harvard University, obesity is a factor in 19% of all cases of heart disease with annual health costs estimated at 30 billion dollars; it’s also a factor in 57% of diabetes cases, with health costs of billion per year.

Now that I am a little wiser on weight loss I tend to Set More Realistic Goals for myself. No doubt you have fallen for one or more of the weight loss diet schemes over the years and I truly have purchased all of them. They all promised quick and painless weight loss. Many of these quick weight loss diet programs undermine your health, cause physical discomfort, flatulence, and ultimately lead to disappointment when you start regaining weight, shortly after losing it.

Fad or quick weight loss diet programs generally overstress one type of food. They contravene the fundamental principle of good nutrition – to remain healthy one must consume a balanced diet, which includes a variety of foods. Safe, healthy, and permanent weight reduction is what’s truly lost among the thousands of popular diet schemes. I am in this for the long haul not the short quick without a failsafe method.

Some of the weight loss diet schemes reign supreme briefly, only to fade out later. While some wane from popularity due to being unproductive or unsafe, some simply lose the public’s curiosity we tend to move onto better, faster, and newer products. Examples of such fad diets include the Grapefruit diet, Cabbage Soup diet, Beverly Hills diet, Apple cider vinegar, green tea diet, there are many popular name diets that I dare not mention here, but I do on my blog – the list goes on and on. These fad diets advocate a specific technique (such as eliminating a certain food, or eating only certain combinations of foods) in conjunction with the basic idea that the body makes up the difference in energy by breaking down and utilizing some part of itself, essentially converting matter into energy.

Everyone knows the immune system works to fight sickness and disease. But what happens if it’s not working properly? What happens if our system becomes too offensive, or if it starts fighting itself?

The immune system is an impressive defensive structure consisting of white blood cells or leukocytes, and the proteins, tissues, and organs that store, produce, or assist them. Leukocytes come in two types: phagocytes, which are the initial destroyers of foreign organisms, and lymphocytes, which remember previous invaders (antigens) and defend against them. A common phagocyte is neutrophil, which fights bacteria. Raised levels of neutrophil in a blood test indicate to doctors that there may be bacterial infection in the body. Lymphocytes can be either B cells, which find antigens, and T cells, which are sent by the B cells to destroy the antigens.

The immune defense system can have problems in many different ways, even given the relative simplicity of the system.

An immunodeficiency is when part of the immune system is missing or might be malfunctioning. One example is when the body has too little IgA, which is an immunoglobulin found in most bodily fluids. If there isn’t enough IgA produced, antigens coming into the body will cause allergies or may be subject to more colds and respiratory infections.

Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) is a condition where the body doesn’t produce B cells and T cells, and thus has virtually no defense against any incoming antigens. AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is caused by the HIV virus, which attacks T-helper cells and disables the system from defending against antigens that would be harmless otherwise.

There are also medications that are designed to suppress the defense system for organ transplants. All of these result in a weak immune system.

Sometimes the immune system attacks the body as if it was an invader. Lupus is a condition where the muscles and joints are attacked. Rheumatoid arthritis is similar to Lupus, however it primarily attacks the knee, hand, and foot joints. Scleroderma affects the skin and internal organs.

Pancreatitis, an inflammation and damage of the pancreas often precedes diabetes mellitus. Some pediatricians still seem to believe that pancreatic disease is rare in children, yet, according to American Family Physician the condition“ is often misdiagnosed, especially in children” and it “is “probably more common than is generally realized.” [1].

Diabetes statistics confirm this. According to American Diabetes Association (ADA) 18.2 million Americans over 20 years of age are diabetic and it has became the fifth-deadliest condition  among people under twenty [2]. Other countries are seeing the same trends [3,4].  It is clear that environmental factors such as drugs (prescription drugs known to upset pancreatic function) and diet are part of this scenario.   Among the complications of diabetes are cardiovascular (CVD), vision loss, stroke, amputations, and kidney disease [5] .  While thankfully not many amputated and blind children are seen at the playgrounds, the parents ought to consider that pancreatic insufficiency is insidious and slowly degenerating beyond repair over time. By the time the child will show full blown diabetes symptoms, irreparable damage to the pancreas may have already occurred.

 Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are characterized by the inability of the pancreas to balance blood sugar. Traditionally,  there is type 1 (insulin dependent), an inherited condition due to faulty genes, and type 2 (diabetes mellitus), an acquired condition.  The physiological difference between the two is that in type 1 the pancreas cannot make insulin at all, while in type 2 the sugar-balancing act of the two hormones, insulin and its antagonist, glucagon, is not adequate (Impaired Glucose Tolerance, IGT). The other difference was that Type 2 was rarely diagnosed in children. Not anymore. “A growing number of children and adolescents are developing type 2 diabetes,” according to ADA.  Most are diagnosed during adolescence, yet “cases of type 2 diabetes in children as young as four years old have been documented” [2].

A pancreatitis attack, characterized mostly by abdominal pain, is easily confounded with other digestive problems. There may be some fever, nausea, vomiting, or rapid pulse, all of which can pass as any other digestive upset coupled with stress. Often there is none of these [1,6].

A severe attack is very serious and can be fatal, as it may lead to heart, lung and kidney failure, or bleeding in the pancreas itself .  Difficulty in breathing is common. If causes are eliminated, a single attack, even severe, is not a problem. More often however (80 percent of cases) individuals have mild attacks, which pass unnoticed, and, if the cause is not eliminated, chronic pancreatitis usually sets in followed by diabetes [5].

In chronic pancreatitis, permanent injury to the organ occurs, and the attacks are less common, as paradoxically, there is less pain, perhaps because more cells of the pancreas die and are replaced by scar tissue, and fewer digestive enzymes are being made.

Unfortunately, the pancreas, while busy with a tremendous work load, does not have the liver’s ability to regenerate itself.  Once its cells have been destroyed, little can one do but try to compensate elsewhere (such as insulin injections).

About 5 percent of the mass of the pancreas (which in an adult has the size of a banana) is responsible with generating the vital hormones that balance salt and sugar in the body (its endocrine function).  The rest is occupied with manufacturing and excreting the numerous enzymes needed for digestion. The so-called pancreatic endocrine cells are clustered together in ‘islets.’  This 5 percent tiny piece of cell mass is divided further in several different types of cells, out of which insulin and glucagon, that balance the blood sugar and the Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) that controls water amount in the intestines [7].

While pancreatitis in children has numerous causes, such as physical trauma and  prescription drugs, among which certain antibiotics and steroids, the association with diet is very strong.  Major nutritional factors associated with pancreatitis are high fats in the blood (hyperlipidemia or hypertriglygeridemia) and gallstones. Gallstones, which form in the gallbladder may cause the blockage of the pancreatic duct or the bile duct, leading to inflammation of the organ, and extreme pain (Colecystitis)  [5].   A condition called fatty liver ( Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease  -NAFLD) has become common in children. According to researchers at Mayo Clinic in Rochester,  “excess fatty acids cause a protein reaction that kills liver cells, causing scarring and liver damage” [8,9].  An impairment of fat metabolism leads to gall bladder insufficiency and danger to the pancreas and is related with arterial degeneration [10].  Furthermore, it has  been established for decades that hydrogenated fatty acids which are used in countless processed foods, including chips, pastries and cookies predispose the consumer to liver damage and arterial disease.  These foods are not only extremely harmful in themselves, but they are also displacing foods high in nutrients and antioxidants from a child’s diet.

How can a parent then judge the gravity of an abdominal pain?  Through history and observation.  Acute pancreatitis usually begins with a pain in the upper abdomen and may be short or may last for several days.  In chronic pancreatitis, either intermittent or chronic abdominal pain may be present. According to Sudipta Misra M.D. [6], many cases lack classical features of vomiting and nausea . One should tell the pediatrician if the child had been taking any prescription drugs. One should consider the possibility of gallstones. Gallstones, agglomerations of cholesterol and other substances,  a major cause of pancreatitis, may cause either severe or diffuse pain, when they remain lodged in the ducts and cause inflammation.  An excess of processed fats (oils which are fried or boiled at high temperature, saturated fats,  trans-fats). The lipid load in the child’s diet is a good indication he/she may have developed gallstones. Excess sugars of any kind, but especially processed sugar [10] will also hurt the pancreas as it forces it to release excess hormones.  In addition sugar which is not used as energy turns into saturated fat and infiltrates organs such as the liver and the pancreas. The inflammation of the pancreas is cumulative, and may occur when a child has eaten an inadequate diet over a period of time. Given that the pancreas has such complex functions, the symptoms of insufficiency are diffuse. The following is a list with possible hints that abdominal pain may be related to pancreatitis.  A diet history of excessive fats and sugars, processed and fried foods, trans-fats and processed fats in the diet, recurrent abdominal pains, diarrhea and/or constipation, obesity, waking up with abdominal pain after midnight, fatty frothy yellow stools.  Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) shows up early in pancreatitis  [5].  It manifests itself as either low or high blood sugar a “vicious hypoglycemic, hyperglycemic cycle” [10]. Among visible symptoms are: carbohydrate overeating and excessive craving, swinging moods, such as aggressive behavior and lethargy, itchy, dry skin, difficulty in focusing,  unexplained fatigue, blurry eyes, water retention . In some cases, high blood sugar and lack of cell-repair capability (a diet low in antioxidants) leads to damage to the peripheral blood vessels, and a barely visible web a tiny broken vessels can be noticed in the child’s cheeks, just as with alcoholism.   Normal blood sugar is so important that other organs such as the adrenal glands and the kidneys intervene.  “A diet high in refined carbohydrates catches the pancreas and the adrenal glands in a biochemical see-saw, overworking them” [10].  This compensatory action weakens the body’s immunity and detoxification ability , leading to allergies, respiratory problems, and susceptibility to infections.  Since the pancreas is responsible with excreting digestive enzymes, a domino effect occurs in which nutrients in food are not properly absorbed and synthesized and health deteriorates further.

Although the medical establishment in general tends to emphasize the hereditary aspect of pancreatitis/diabetes/fatty liver disease  (and of most diseases for that matter), many clinicians and authors such as noted authority in nutrition, Udo Erasmus PhD, stress the evidence of diet and the possibility of early prevention [4] [10].

Such diet would be  high (10-12 daily serving) in fruits and vegetables, antioxidants, live enzymes (enzymes are destroyed in cooking)  and would be low in saturated fats, processed fats (such as hard cheeses)  and sugars (such as bleached flower).  It should completely avoid oils cooked at high temperature (french fries) and any kind of trans-fats and processed meats.

This does not mean that one should keep their children locked up.  Small amounts of anything will probably not harm as long as the child is protected by high amounts of healthy nutrients and protective antioxidants.
